I actually saw people trying to defend Ueno after the last chapter of Koe no Katachi. Not even in the typical troll/bait way that exists in places like /a/ but genuinely trying to think “well maybe she had a reason for slapping Shouko”. Hopefully this chapter puts that stupidity to rest. Ueno is too self-centered to ever examine what happened truthfully. She’s too busy deflecting blame to everyone else, she has no concept of what it means to be real friend (which is why I don’t think she’s really friends with Sahara; after all she lumped Sahara in with other “losers” previously and still thinks she’s a “naive simpleton”).
She thinks dealing with the past is going “well it happened, no use crying, what’s done is done” and that’s that. She completely lacks introspection or the ability to see herself as being in the wrong. She wants to make peace with Shouko while still blaming her for everything that happened (and Shouko obviously blames herself for it all too) and when Shouko doesn’t take it (by saying that she hates herself) Ueno’s reaction is to slap her and say “so what”. She’s a terrible person and that makes her both a great character and a great antagonist but she’s not a person who deserves any kind of second chances from the reader at this point.
Stuff like this or Solanin hits me way too hard. Even something like Molester Man in the general “I’m a loser but want to get better” sense. I love this stuff but a lot of the time it’s also way too close to home.
Still, though, good short story. I hope YOKO gets a full series at some point in the future.
